In April 1996, Hartford Hospital initiated its Lifesaver Project, a jointly funded project with the March of Dimes and Hartford Hospital Auxiliary, aimed at increasing awareness of domestic violence to women and children victims.

 

The Lifesaver Project offers two weekly information and discussion groups to women and children who are, or have been, personally affected by domestic violence. 

 

The Lifesaver Project is a unique hospital-based program that offers groups in English and Spanish, led by experts in the field of domestic violence with concurrent therapeutic groups for the children. Child life experts and volunteer support lead the children’s groups. 

 

The Lifesaver Project boasts its success in offering assistance to over 200 women and children in its first eight months of operation.  The importance of group work in the area of domestic violence cannot be overemphasized. Groups are the antithesis of isolation, a major tactic used in relationships where domestic violence is present.
