Neuroscience/Neurotrauma ICU (C9I)
C9I is the new 18-bed Neurotrauma ICU at Hartford Hospital. The focus is on state-of-the-art, evidence-based care for neuroscience, trauma, surgery and medicine patients. The team is the cornerstone for delivery of high quality care to critically ill patients incorporating the principles of Transformation of the Intensive Care Unit (TICU) and more recently Critical Care Innovation Network (CCIN).

Diagnoses commonly seen are:
- Multi-Trauma
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Spinal Cord Injury
- Intracerebral and subarachnoid hemmorhage (SAH)
- Aneursym - surgically clipped or coiled in interventional radiology
- CVA patients receiving intravenous TPA
- Craniotomy for tumor

Educational Opportunities/Orientation
Nursing growth and development of staff are a high priority. There is a focused orientation, which includes clinical time with preceptors focusing on the care of the patients with cerebral aneurysm, brain tumors, head and spinal cord injuries. The special needs of the patient undergoing neurointerventional procedures, as well as intracranial pressure monitoring, are also key components for the orientation to C9I.
There is a strong mentorship program on the unit. Staff members are also participating in SimCenter training, the Red Pod Trauma class and the Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC).
The Nurse manager is at the forefront in facilitating the certification classes for Certified Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) and Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse (CNRN) here at Hartford Hospital.
There are many education opportunities both within the hospital and outside which are offered and staff are encouraged to attend. One of these opportunities offered is the Critical Care Core Course.
C9I strives to provide patients with cutting edge technology and the best science related to care. The Licox brain tissue oxygen monitor system is in use in the unit. The monitor guides the team in adjusting cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) based on patient needs. Other advances are related to neuroradiology procedures including embolization of vascular abnormalities, clot retrieval (MERCI procedure) and intra-arterial and intravenous tPA.
Neurology/Neurosurgery/Trauma/ENT (North 9)
 North 9 is a 30 bed medical/surgical teaching unit (with a 6-bed step-down area) specializing in the care of Neuro/Trauma/ ENT patients. Diagnoses commonly seen on North 9 include trauma including patients involved in MCA’s, CVA, Post-Op Brain surgery, Post-Op Lumbar and Cervical disc and fusion surgery, Epistaxis, and Multiple Sclerosis.
The patients on North 9 typically have many technical aspects included in their care such as:
- Central and PICC lines
- Tracheotomies
- G/J Tubes
- Chest Tubes
- Halo Cervical Immobilzation
- Lumbar Drains
- Patient Controlled Analgesia Pumps
- Epidural Analgesia Pumps
Other Special features include Shared Governance, The Neuroscience Health Care Team, The Trauma Health Care team, and a team approach to patient care.
