AP/CP Competency-Based Training |
Competency-Based Training
Targeted educational outcomes are structured using the following six General Competencies with expectations that the resident will achieve a level expected of a new practitioner in Pathology.
Patient Care: Residents must be able to handle every patient specimen in a manner that is responsible and appropriate and takes into consideration the needs of the patient and family.
Activities: Surgical Pathology grossing and sign-out, Autopsy, chart review, communication with clinical staff, external examination, prosection and sign-out, Frozen section performance, AP/CP on-call responsibility, Fine needle aspiration and FNA adequacy assessment, Peripheral blood smear review and bone marrow aspirations and Plasmapheresis oversight and transfusion reaction assessment
Medical Knowledge: Residents must demonstrate knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical, and epidemiological sciences and the application of this knowledge to pathology.
Activities: Weekly core curriculum lecture series systematically covers major topics in Anatomic Pathology in a reoccurring two year cycle Weekly core curriculum lecture series systematically covers major topics in Clinical Pathology in a reoccurring two year cycle, Weekly Surgical Pathology/Hematopathology Unknown Conference, Intra- and inter-departmental conferences (Adult and Pediatric Tumor Board, CPC/Medical Grand Rounds, Breast Conference Adult and Pediatric GI Conference, Transplantation Conference, Radiology/Pathology Conference), Medical Technology Course for Clinical Pathology, Assigned service work including basic rotations in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology as well as sub-specialty and selected rotations, Daily sign-out with attending staff in Surgical Pathology, Hematopathology, and Cytopathology, supplemental self study guides, yearly Resident In-Service Examination and quarterly ASCP Checkpath and CAP Program Improvement Program.
Practice-Based Learning and Improvement: Residents must be able to investigate and evaluate their clinical practices, appraise and assimilate scientific evidence, and improve patient care practices.
Activities: Participation in departmental quality assurance/quality control programs including cytopathology and intraoperative correlations, Participation in departmental research projects leading to presentation at national meetings or publication in subspecialty journals, Resident/Fellow Journal Club conference, and CAP Virtual Management College teleconference program
Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Residents must demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange and teaming with professional associates.
Activities: Daily sign-out with attending staff in Surgical Pathology, Hematopathology, and Cytopathology including written reports (gross descriptions, autopsy gross descriptions, diagnostic write-ups, and other laboratory reports), Resident Topic Presentation and Small group discussions
Professionalism: Residents must demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles, and sensitivity to a diverse patient population.
Assessment: The resident’s ability to interact with their peers, the laboratory staff, and the attending staff will be assessed by the faculty and technical staff during regular bi-annual evaluations (360° Assessment)
Systems-Based Practice: Residents must demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care and the ability to effectively call on system resources to provide care that is of optimal value.
Assessment: The resident’s ability to understand the rationale for the use of laboratory resources will be evaluated by the various laboratory directors. The knowledge of various health care laws, coding and billing practices as they pertain to the practice of pathology are addressed as situations occur. The residents’ understanding of these issues is assessed by the yearly-administered national ASCP Resident In-Service Exam.
