Capsule Endoscopy
A capsule endoscopy is an exam that allows your doctor to examine your entire small intestines -- part of the gastrointestinal tract that cannot be visualized with upper endoscopy or colonoscopy.

The patient swallows a vitamin pill sized video capsule that has its own camera and light source.  As the capsule travels through the intestines, it sends images to a data recorder the patient wears on a waist belt.  The doctor later views these images.

Your physician will determine if you need this procedure based on a physical examination and evaluation of your symptoms, such as recurrent or persistent abdominal pain, diarrhea, bleeding or anemia. If you need this exam, you will be referred to a doctor who specializes in Capsule Endoscopy.
