What is Medical Technology? |
Medical Technologists (MT), also known as Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS), are an essential part of the health care team.
They develop, perform, and evaluate clinical laboratory procedures. Using the latest technology, the technologists analyze samples of blood, tissue, and body fluids. The tests they utilize may diagnose diabetes, monitor levels of immunosuppressive drugs in transplant patients, detect leukemia, or identify microorganisms in a wound infection, to name just a few.
Medical Technologists ensure a well-run laboratory by monitoring quality indicators, providing accurate results, and training and supervising other technologists. They understand the theory of the testing methods and are able to interpret the significance of unusual results. The information they provide to doctors and researchers is essential to patient care. Without this information, doctors would find it more difficult to diagnose and monitor disease.
