Clinical Lab Tour - Specimen Processing
specimen 1Here at Hartford Hospital Specimen Processing, doctors and nurses send blood, tissue, or urine in tubes or other appropriate containers from the floor to be tested. Phlebotomists also deliver blood after drawing hospitalized patients.

At the Core Lab, some specimens are delivered from outpatient drawing stations or sent for reference testing by the hospital laboratory. From the window, the specimen processing team will receive the specimen and place pertinent data into the computer and, if necessary, aliquot the specimen according to what tests are ordered. These aliquots are then directed to their final destinations via a tube system or by our courier system.

specimen 2Hartford Hospital currently performs all STAT tests onsite. However, any routine testing requires the specimen to be sent to the Core Lab. All specimens brought over to the Core Lab are given to the specimen processing team there to make sure that all the tests to be done are sent to their appropriate area of the lab.
